What is the difference between J1939 and NMEA 2000?

J1939 and NMEA 2000 are both based on the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus protocol and share many similarities, but they have some important differences as well.

J1939 is a protocol designed for heavy-duty vehicles and industrial applications, while NMEA 2000 is a protocol designed specifically for marine applications. While both protocols use the same underlying CAN bus technology, there are some key differences in terms of the types of data that are transmitted, the types of devices that are used, and the way the networks are configured.

One of the main differences is the way that devices are addressed on the network. In J1939, each device is assigned a unique address, while in NMEA 2000, each device is assigned a unique identifier based on its type, and messages are sent to specific types of devices rather than specific addresses.

Another difference is the types of messages that are supported. J1939 supports a wide range of message types for different types of data, while NMEA 2000 focuses primarily on marine data such as navigation, engine, and weather data.

Finally, there are differences in the physical connectors and cabling used for the two protocols. J1939 typically uses Deutsch connectors and heavy-duty cabling, while NMEA 2000 uses smaller, waterproof connectors and thinner cabling designed for use in marine environments.
